At Threemile Canyon Farms we believe that the way you farm is as important as the products you produce. So we constantly strive to find ways to meet our customers' needs while respecting the land, animals and people around us. We're proud that we've been recognized by organizations like Sustainable Northwest for our work in linking good business with sound environmental practices. At Threemile Canyon Farms, we believe that the way you farm is as important as the products you produce. So we constantly strive to find ways to meet our customers' needs while respecting the land, animals and people around us. We're proud that we've been recognized by organizations like Sustainable Northwest for our work in linking good business with sound environmental practices.

Our innovative practices include

  • Wise water use: By using a high-tech irrigation system and natural methods to improve our soil, we minimize our use of the Northwest's water resources. When our farm was first established, we voluntarily surrendered some of our rights to precious Columbia River water.
  • Wildlife and habitat protection: We placed 23,000 acres - more than a quarter of our farm - into a wildlife conservation area, helping to preserve irreplaceable Columbia Basin grassland habitat and the species that depend on it.
  • Sustainable dairy practices: By combining a dairy with a large-scale potato farm, we created a closed-loop system that allows each agricultural activity to sustain and improve the other. We produce milk free of artificial rBST and raise our own replacement cows, giving us total oversight of our herd through its life-cycle.
  • Recycling and waste control: We use dairy compost extensively on our fields so our soil will retain water better. And we recycle and reuse all of our water that isn't used for drinking.
  • Improving air quality: Our farm is partnering on an innovative methane digester pilot project that extracts methane gas from manure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The digester provides a renewable source of energy to heat water at our dairy.
  • Large-scale green farming: By providing a dependable source of organic crops, we're helping organic retailers and processors develop their markets. We also use advanced technology to record all farm crop inputs in real time, providing our customers with relevant data on each crop they purchase.
  • Tillage practices: Our farm uses strip tilling practices with GPS equipment to prevent top soil erosion and minimize fuel usage. As part of this process, our cover crops are also used as a feed crop for our dairy cows.

'Whether it's leading-edge technology or natural solutions, we use the best farming practices to produce high quality farm products in ways that treat the land gently.'
